L’Apparita has enjoyed cult status right from its first vintage, 1985. Lying at the top of the Bellavista vineyard, at an elevation of 490 metres, is the collection of small parcels that make up the L’Apparita vineyard, a total of 3.84 hectares. It was planted to Canaiolo and Malvasia Bianca in 1975, but grafted over to clone 342 of Merlot between 1982 and 1985. Its open lyre training system and clay-rich soil make this small cru a true jewel in the international wine world.
Growing season weather conditions
The start of vine growth was normal, but a rise in temperatures and scarce rainfall in May brought forward budbreak and flowering by about 15 days. The first part of summer saw below-average temperatures and rain, but temperatures returned to normal levels in mid-July. Harvest of the early-ripeners was under fair sun and above-average temperatures, while strong weather disturbances in late September and early October required great care to bring in good quality with the traditional varieties.
Vinificazione e affinamento
Le uve selezionate per q.li 150 sono state raccolte il 21 Settembre. Tali uve sono state pigiate e diraspate. La fermentazione si è sviluppata in maniera regolare ad una temperatura compresa tra i 30° ed i 33°. I rimontaggi si sono succeduti numerosi per tutto il periodo fermentativo e la macerazione si è protratta fino alla soglia dei 28 giorni. Dopo la svinatura di Hl. 101 si è proceduto ad effettuare la fermentazione malolattica parzialmente in barriques. All’inizio del 1993 il vino è passato interamente in barriques di rovere di Allier per il 75% nuove, per circa 14 mesi. L’imbottigliamento è stato effettuato a Maggio 1994 ottenendo 11.752 bordolesi e 335 magnum.
Tasting Notes
Rich, dense, and full-volumed as if that September had seen no rain at all, displaying an almost unbelievable sensory depth in which qualities of the grape, velvet-smooth and supple, easily outstrip those from the oak. The palate shows a slightly more measured power than in previous vintages, with a balance that nears Platonic perfection; the tannins are smooth and glossy, acidity barely perceptible, and mouthfeel absolutely alluring.
